 On arrival at Napoli Centrale station from Rome, take your time with a cappuccino and cornetto then head downstairs to Napoli Piazza Garibaldi station beneath the main concourse. It's easy to reach by escalator then a five or six minute walk to the platform. From there, board your scheduled train to Pompeii station.

 Try and relax on the way to Pompeii, as Mount Vesuvius will loom in and out of view en route. It's the same colossus today as when it erupted and will likely do so again in the near future, if vulcanologists are to be believed.

 At the Pompeii meeting point, locate your guide and enter the ruined city. Understand why the eruption happened and feel the fate of the Pompeiians. What have we learned and what is yet to be discovered?
