Slow Tourism Pompeii from Rome
Reach Pompeii from Rome by regional train. No rushing around on this day trip - you'll arrive in Naples rested and relaxed before taking a second local train to the ruins. Slow Tourism Pompeii from Rome gives travellers the chance to find their feet before experiencing Pompeii in the company of a working archaeologist.
It is true that there are more than a few Rome to Pompeii excursions, and most of them, including one of ours, are driven by speed.
For some, this is ideal, even on holiday. For others, however, it defeats the object of relaxation. Why rush? Slow Tourism, like slow food, means taking your time, moment by moment.
Slow Tourism makes a lot of sense. A holiday is a holiday and to slow down should mean everything. What better way to do it than relax on a train in a foreign land and watch the world go by (with a low carbon footprint).
Leave Rome in the early morning and relax until your arrival in the port city of Naples. From there, a second scheduled train ride will carry you to Pompeii town, a pleasant walk away from the meeting point where your guided tour of Pompeii begins.
Two hours exploring the ruins with an archaeologist will reveal a great deal about the story of Pompeii. How the Pompeiians lived, and how they died.
Why is what we see today so compelling for travellers and of singular importance for archaeologists? Mass media portrays skewed realities of the catastrophe for mass consumption. To what extent do they embellish the facts?
The destruction of Pompeii was violent in the extreme, without understatement. One must glean the truth, and on this tour you will uncover many truths in colourful frescoes, sculpture, and ancient graffiti.
Post-tour, slow down in the ruins and retrace your steps if you'd like to see more of what was shown to you before. After the archaeology, return to Pompeii town station and board your scheduled train back to Naples ahead of the return train to Roma Termini.
