Beauty of Baroque
The original and most comprehensive private tour of Baroque Rome that walks in the footsteps of Bernini and Borromini.
In 17th century Baroque Rome, the Catholic church took complete artistic control. Skilled architects and painters became the new standard bearers of Catholic propaganda. The most easily recognizable landmarks in Rome today are attributable to their mastery.
These grandiose sculptures have come to define our historical city centre.
Taking Carlo Maderno's lead, Giacomo della Porta, Pietro da Cortona, Gianlorenzo Bernini and Francesco Borromini created outstanding major works of art. All have become must-sees in Rome, due in no small part to the overflow of stylistic excess apparent in each.
We visit all of the squares, palaces, galleries and basilicas included on Bernini Master Sculptor. What makes this tour absolutely unique is the addition of Rome's Jesuit church of Sant'Ignazio (Andrea Pozzo, High Roman Baroque). The Sistine Chapel ceiling and St. Peter's dome are beautiful, but physical and real. The illusions inside Sant'Ignazio suggest elements of the metaphysical are at play in an unreal setting.
There are perhaps a dozen Baroque tours in Rome. Some are private (as ours), while others appear to be small group tours that last for c. two hours and do not enter any palaces or galleries, so we are duty bound to question their purpose. We know that a two hour tour is cutting it very fine, not even scratching the surface of such an important period in the history of our city.
A private Roman Baroque tour is obligatory, to see what must be seen and understand what it all means.
